The Intangible Skills That Win Matches—On the Court and in Leadership

Every tennis match, like every project, comes with unexpected challenges. The ability to pivot, push through setbacks, and work with others is what separates good players from great leaders.

Adjusting Your Game Plan

Tennis has taught me that no match goes exactly as planned. You might step onto the court with a strategy, but your opponent’s unexpected drop shots or shifting winds force you to adjust. The same is true in consulting. Projects rarely follow a straight path, and the ability to pivot, whether in response to shifting client needs or unforeseen challenges, is what keeps things moving forward.

Staying in the Match

Resilience is another essential skill. In tennis, you will lose points, games, and even entire sets. But a strong mindset allows you to reset and fight back. Leading complex initiatives requires the same perseverance. Setbacks are inevitable, but the ability to push through them often determines success.

Strength in Doubles

And then there’s relationship-building—arguably the most powerful skill of all. Tennis may be an individual sport, but even the best players rely on coaches, doubles partners, and a support system. At Reach Consulting, our work is built on trust and collaboration. Technical expertise can’t replace the ability to truly listen, connect, and foster meaningful partnerships.

Leadership is a mindset

Winning in leadership, like in tennis, isn’t just about perfecting your technique. It’s about having the right mindset. Adaptability, resilience, and strong relationships are what turn a talented player or leader into a champion. And that’s what I strive for in every project at Reach Consulting.
